Descripcción y objetivos:

The aim of the “Small Area Estimation and Mixed Models” conference is to promote scientific cooperation between statisticians interested in the application of methodologies derived from mixed models and in the analysis of data with different correlation structures. In particular, the conference promotes the discussion of the applicability of procedures for estimating socioeconomic indicators (unemployment rate, poverty rate, etc.) in geographical areas or population groups with small sample sizes and their possible use in European public statistics surveys. To this end, speakers from statistical offices and the university world will participate.

The main added value of the “Small Area Estimation and Mixed Models” conference is that the presentations will consist of papers that open up new areas of application. Thus, the time dedicated to discussion and the exchange of ideas plays a key role. The aim of the conference is to take a first step towards the creation of a working group within the Society of Statistics and Operational Research (SEIO) with the idea of uniting the most active and internationally-projected Spanish groups working in the area of Small Area Estimation (SAE).

The conference will feature the participation of distinguished professor and researcher Partha Lahiri, as plenary speaker. Dr. Partha Lahiri is a professor of Survey Methodology and Mathematics at the University of Maryland, College Park, and an adjunct research professor at the Institute of Social Research, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He is currently serving as the Director of the Joint Program in Survey Methodology (JPSM). His areas of research interest include data linkages, Bayesian statistics, survey sampling, and small-area estimation. Dr. Lahiri has served on the editorial boards of several international journals and on numerous advisory committees, including the U.S. Census Advisory Committee and a U.S. National Academy panel. He has also acted as an advisor or consultant for various international organizations, such as the United Nations and the World Bank. He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and an elected member of the International Statistical Institute. Dr. Lahiri received the 2020 SAE Award for his outstanding contributions to the research, application, and education of small-area estimation. He was awarded the Neyman Medal during a joint session of the 3rd Congress of Polish Statistics and the 2022 International Association of Official Statistics (IAOS) held in Krakow, Poland, for his significant contributions to the development of statistical sciences. Dr. Lahiri is currently serving as the President-Elect of the International Association of Survey Statisticians.
