Abstract:
The rapid transformation of the electricity industry presents great opportunities but also introduces significant uncertainties in electricity markets, particularly in terms of price signals. Increasing uncertainty and complexity can hinder the effective integration of information into prices, as a result, market prices may no longer accurately reflect relevant information reducing overall market efficiency. The technological and policy shifts driving these changes are transforming market dynamics across multiple dimensions and are expected to completely reshape the traditional market paradigm. Now, more than ever, there is an urgent need to rethink the role of markets in this evolving industry. A key question is whether markets, through effective price signals, can successfully guide this transformation to ensure reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy systems for society. This analysis aims to highlight the complex challenges of energy transformation from the unique perspective of Chile, a country that has achieved a rapid and large-scale transition through a market-based approach. It also explores the growing uncertainties in market price signals, which pose significant challenges to the effectiveness of this transition.
