In this seminar, we will recall the most important results of this beautiful theory, putting emphasis on the two-dimensional case, and illustrating it with some surprising applications to applied sciences: why was the First World War unavoidable, why did the centrifugal governor of the steam engine begin to fail as the quality of materials improved or why the abuse of insecticides may be the least effective way to combat a plague. In order to follow the talk only basic background on differential equations and linear algebra is needed.
Brief Bio:
Víctor Jiménez is a Professor of Mathematical Analysis of the University of Murcia.
