A family of estimators, based on distances and containing the maximum likelihood estimator as a special case, will be introduced for solving the estimation problem appearing in the example. For testing hypotheses, two families of test statistics are introduced: The first one is based on distances and the second one is a Wald-type statistics. The talk analyzes the characteristics of the estimators and the test statistics. A simulation experiment studies, a simple way, their behaviors and gives comparison with the MLE and the LRT. Finally, the classical problem of testing the equality of means in normal populations with equal variances (t-tests) is used for comparing the new and old considered statistical procedures.
\nBrief Bio:<\/strong>
\nLeandro Pardo Llorente is professor at the Department of Statistics and Operations Research of the Complutense University of Madrid and he is President of the Spanish Society of Statistics and Operations Research.
